We Have a Dream — And We Build It Every Day
Unnati Balgram is a registered society founded in August 2020, in the heart of India’s first COVID wave. What began as an urgent response to support vulnerable children during crisis, has grown into a long-term movement to shelter, educate, and empower those most in need.
We believe that “We Have a Dream” — a dream where every child, regardless of background, has a safe home, a strong education, and the chance to thrive.
Over the years, we’ve built shelter homes, transformed government schools, planted millions of trees, and mobilized thousands of volunteers — all grounded in compassion, dignity, and impact.
We don’t just support children — we walk alongside them, from rescue to independence.
Our Approach
We Facilitate Safe Learning Spaces
Structured Daily Routine: We follow a time-based schedule with balanced time for learning, play, and rest — instilling discipline, focus, and self-confidence.
Education First: Each child’s learning level is individually assessed, and we design bridge programs (ILPs) to build strong foundational skills in reading, writing, and numeracy.
Personalized Support: We identify each child’s unique needs — whether academic, emotional, or behavioral — and work consistently with them through mentors and caregivers.
Nutritious Meals: Our children receive well-balanced, home-cooked meals designed to meet daily nutritional needs and support healthy development.
Joyful Learning Environment: From storytelling to science activities, we use creative learning techniques to make education joyful, especially for first-generation learners.
Holistic Development:
🏃♂️ Sports & Play: Daily outdoor play, structured sports, and team activities promote health and confidence.
🧘 Life Skills: We include personal hygiene, empathy, problem-solving, and teamwork.
🎨 Art & Expression: Music, drawing, drama, and celebration days to nurture creativity.
Safe & Enriching Facilities: Clean dormitories, safe toilets, study zones, a mini library, sports equipment, and learning aids ensure our kids grow in a dignified, stimulating space.

— Our Story
Unnati Balgram began in August 2020, during the peak of India’s first COVID wave — a time when the most vulnerable children were invisible to the system. We saw kids being pushed into child labor, begging, or abandonment. We knew we couldn’t fix everything, but we could stand by at least one child — and so we started.
But it wasn’t easy.
We struggled to even find a space to start our shelter home. In the beginning, we couldn’t afford beds. Children slept on the floor. There were days we weren’t sure if we could provide the next meal. We used up our own savings, took help from friends, and yet, we didn’t stop. Because those 12 children mattered.
We didn’t chase numbers. We focused on these 12 children — deeply, consistently, personally. Today, each one has a name, a story, and a dream they’re working toward. And that’s our greatest impact.
Even now, we survive largely on crowdfunding and the generosity of corporate volunteers. Every contribution counts — be it one-time donations, volunteer time, or spreading the word.
As we worked deeper in rural areas, we didn’t stop at shelter. We saw schools in poor conditions, broken toilets, no water, no dignity. So we expanded into:
School Transformation Projects (STP) – rebuilding classrooms, toilets, water access
Tree Plantation & Greening – restoring ecosystems and involving children in climate action
Employee Engagement Programs – bringing urban volunteers to the grassroots
These are not side projects — they are responses to real, urgent needs we saw on the ground.
We started with nothing but a will to help. Today, we’re building something sustainable — slowly, honestly, with the community.
